Microsoft To Fund Ongoing Work of SETDA’s Cybersecurity & Privacy Collaborative

June 8, 2023 (Washington, D.C.) — Today, SETDA shared that Microsoft has awarded a grant to support its Cybersecurity and Privacy Collaborative in 2023. SETDA’s Cybersecurity and Privacy Collaborative is a professional learning community of state edtech leaders and corporate members focused on identifying key resources, assessing state-level K-12 cybersecurity advocacy efforts, and crafting policy recommendations.

The grant, which reflects Microsoft’s commitment to collaborate with policymakers around the world to address online security challenges and support global efforts to make the future of computing more secure, will support the Cybersecurity & Privacy Collaborative’s focus on how states can assist small, rural, and other under-resourced districts in strengthening their cybersecurity readiness.

“Cybersecurity is a top issue for our state members,” said Julia Fallon, Executive Director of SETDA. “Helping to prevent breaches of student and educator data and lessening financial burdens is paramount, and we are thrilled that this grant from Microsoft will allow us to focus on how to best serve rural and underrepresented districts.”

“Strong cyber hygiene is critically important in K-12 schools to ensure devices and technology are safe and secure. We are pleased to support SETDA’s efforts to help expand cybersecurity resources in small, rural, and other under-resourced districts,” said Lydia Smyers, VP of US Education, Microsoft.

With Microsoft’s support, SETDA will begin its next phase of cybersecurity and privacy work. The Cybersecurity and Privacy Collaborative will develop and curate cybersecurity resources targeted toward small, rural, and other under-resourced districts and produce a spotlight of cooperative service models and state-coordinated programs. SETDA will add the resources to its Cybersecurity and Privacy Collection in the OER Commons.
