Students from Math, Science & Technology Magnet Academy at Roosevelt High
Address National Education Leaders in Washington D.C.
Students Make History as First California School to Present at the
State Educational Technology Directors Association National Leadership Summit
Washington, DC (Oct. 28, 2015) – SETDA, the principal membership association of the U.S. state and territorial educational technology leaders with the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools today announced that the Math, Science & Technology Magnet Academy at Roosevelt High School (MSTMA), made history this week as the first California school to address the Education Forum at SETDA’s annual Leadership Summit.
The SETDA Leadership Summit brings together leaders from more than 40 state departments of education, including leaders in educational technology, assessment, instructional materials and professional development. The Education Forum shines a spotlight on the full scope of the digital transformation of policy and practice underway in K-12 education.
“SETDA is proud to share the unique deeper learning experiences of the Math, Science and Technology Academy students with our members and guests from across the country,” stated Christine Fox, Director of Educational Leadership and Research. “Educators can potentially replicate this digital learning experience in their local schools.”
MSTMA was invited to share their work integrating technology with their Service-Learning Project to explore community rights. For their project, students used mapping technology software to create data-driven research that examines how gentrification, affordable housing and characterization of public schools was shaping their community. Students not only researched, but also designed workshops to educate their peers, teachers and the school community.
“We are extremely proud of our students and their teachers for being innovators and leaders in leveraging technology to explore social justice issues,” said Joan Sullivan, CEO of Partnership for LA Schools. “Our students made sacrifices in order to create compelling research projects that went beyond the superficial to uncover and examine challenges facing their communities. We applaud the SETDA for recognizing the efforts of our students.”

About the Partnership
The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools is a non-profit organization that manages a portfolio of some of LA’s historically most underserved public schools and focuses on piloting innovations that can be scaled across the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Launched in 2008, the Partnership is a collaboration of LAUSD, the City of Los Angeles and the philanthropic sector, and today it serves more than 14,000 students across 17 campuses in Watts, Boyle Heights and South Los Angeles. The Partnership is one of the largest public school turnaround initiatives in the nation. Over their first six years, Partnership schools have nearly doubled their four-year graduation rate from 36% to 70%. Furthermore, in the first year of the new Common-Core aligned Smarter Balanced exams, the Partnership closed the proficiency gap to LAUSD by 4% points in English and 9% points in math; at this rate, Partnership schools will surpass LAUSD in math in two years and in English in four years.
