Washington, DC – Lan Neugent has been named Interim Executive Director of the State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA). SETDA is the non-profit membership association founded in 2001 to support U.S. state and territorial leaders in advancing education through effective technology policy and practice. The decision is part of a plan by the Board of Directors to find a permanent successor for Doug Levin, after he announced his departure in December.

Lan Neugent recently retired as the Assistant Superintendent for Technology, Career and Adult Education at the Virginia Department of Education. Under his direction, Technology, Career and Adult Education Division units provided technical support for other departmental divisions, liaison with other state agencies, and support for local educational agencies. Major division initiatives include online testing, adult literacy programming, open educational resources development, technology best practices, longitudinal data system implementation, career training and industry certifications and virtual school programming. Lan is a former Chair of SETDA’s Board of Directors, Federal Policy Committee Chair and most recently a SETDA Board member; he has over 10 years of experience with SETDA.

“I am very excited to step into this position with the opportunity to build upon SETDA’s high quality work. SETDA will continue to craft policies for emerging educational technology issues and create high-impact resources for our members and educators across the country.” said Lan Neugent, incoming Interim Executive Director.

“We are extremely fortunate that Lan will be able to step into the role of Interim Executive Director. He has a long history with the organization and knows the staff and membership well. Lan is well-versed on the salient issues critical to SETDA members and the greater educational community including broadband and device access, digital content, online assessment and data and student privacy.” said Peter Drescher, Education Technology Coordinator at the Vermont Agency of Education and current SETDA Board Chair.

“Lan has been a true leader in Virginia and nationally. He is best positioned to support SETDA’s transition as our members continue to lead the shift to digital learning, focused on preparing America’s students to be college and career ready. “ stated Carla Wade, Digital Learning Specialist, Oregon Department of Education and SETDA Board Chair-Elect. Doug Levin will transition out of his role as Executive Director through January, ending his work there in mid-February.
