SETDA Honors Senator Jeff Bingaman of New Mexico as the 2010 Federal Policy Maker of the Year

November 17, 2010 (Washington, D.C.) – The State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA) honored Senator Jeff Bingaman (NM) as its Federal Policy Maker of the Year for demonstrating powerful vision for and support of student success powered by educational technology within New Mexico and nationally.  The award was announced at the 2010 SETDA Leadership Summit: “Innovation Through State Leadership,” which was held November 7 – 10 at the Gaylord National (National Harbor, MD).

Senator Bingaman has long been a champion for the use of technology to drive educational reform and increase efficiency and effectiveness throughout the educational enterprise.  He is the lead sponsor of the Achievement Through Technology and Innovation Act (ATTAIN) and has supported full funding of the Enhancing Education Through Technology Program (ESEA Title IID/EETT).  Both ATTAIN and EETT are meant to ensure every student is prepared for work and citizenship in the 21st century and every educator has the professional development and tools to help students attain that goal.

“Senator Bingaman has provided steadfast leadership in ensuring that all students and teachers have the resources and tools they need to succeed in the 21st century,” stated Douglas Levin, Executive Director of SETDA.  “We appreciate both his personal advocacy and his efforts to lead by example.”

Cathy Poplin, chair of the SETDA Board of Directors, noted, “Senator Bingaman truly understands that technology must play an integral role in all aspects of education reform and that federal and state partnerships are crucial to scaling the reform across the country.  We applaud his dedication to education and the children of our country.”
