SETDA Releases the EdTech Quality Indicators Procurement Guide
February 12, 2025 (Washington, DC) – SETDA, the principal non-profit membership association representing U.S. state and territorial educational technology and digital learning leaders, has released Easing the Burden on Schools: Integrating the Five EdTech Quality Indicators Into State Procurement Processes. This comprehensive resource is designed to help state and district leaders evaluate and select high-quality educational technology products based on a rigorous set of criteria.
In response to the growing complexity and sheer volume of edtech tools, SETDA collaborated with leading educational organizations to develop a framework centered on five key quality indicators: Safe, Evidence-Based, Inclusive, Usable, and Interoperable. These indicators are designed to simplify the procurement process and ensure that the tools selected are aligned with the best educational practices and policies.
“As educational technology continues to be an integral part of today’s classroom experience, school districts need reliable strategies to select products that best serve their students and educators,” said Julia Fallon, Executive Director of SETDA. “This guide equips decision-makers with actionable insights to navigate the complexities of evaluating edtech, ensuring that products are safe, effective, and inclusive.”
The new resource offers detailed strategies for embedding these quality indicators into state procurement processes, featuring adaptable questions and example third-party validators. It also includes models of leadership from states that have successfully implemented these practices, providing a roadmap for others to follow.
SETDA is committed to supporting state education agency leaders, educational technology directors, chief technology officers, procurement and contract officers, and K-12 digital learning and innovation specialists in refining their processes to ensure that all students have access to high-quality edtech products and services.
