SETDA Announces 2019-2020 Board Members and Officers

Washington, D.C. – The State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA), has announced its Board of Directors and Officers for 2019-2020. SETDA is the principal association representing U.S. state and territorial educational technology leaders.

They include:

• Laurel Ballard, Wyoming Department of Education (Chair)
• Eric Hileman (Emeritus), Oklahoma City Public Schools (Chair-elect)
• Carla Wade, Oregon Department of Education (Treasurer)
• Ann-Marie Mapes, Michigan Department of Education (Secretary)
• Julia Fallon, Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, Washington (Past-Chair)
• Todd Lawrence, Idaho State Department of Education
• Val Emrich, Maryland Department of Education
• Rick Gaisford, Utah State Board of Education
• Doug Casey, Connecticut State Commission for Educational Technology (newly elected)
• Melinda Fiscus, Illinois State Board of Education (newly elected)

“The State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA) is an active advocacy association focused on building and increasing the capacity of state and national leaders to improve education through technology policy and practice. SETDA strives to maintain a future-focused, holistic view on how to leverage technology for education, engage strategic partners, and encourage equity,” said Laurel Ballard, new Chair of the SETDA Board of Directors.

“SETDA will continue to envision how best to provide leadership and advocacy to see that the K-12 education is empowered to ensure all students have access to high-quality technology instruction and all faculty have access to highly effective professional development,” Ballard continued. “As the Chair of the Board, I look forward to leading these endeavors to ensure success for our national, state, and private sector partners.”

“Our SETDA Board of Directors are a dedicated group of state members who collaborate to provide their fellow state leaders with the tools and connections to  advocate, research and disseminate innovative opportunities to transform teaching and learning through technology,” noted Candice Dodson, SETDA Executive Director.

“Our organization is focused on a variety of issues including: equity of access to education, personalizing learning, title II/IV, high quality instructional materials, student data privacy, cybersecurity,  and interoperability. The Board firmly believes in the value of demonstrating collaborative leadership, including work with states, affiliates, private sector partners, and other national organizations, to address these critical issues in a productive way,” she said.

The SETDA Board was elected at its annual Emerging Technologies Leadership Forum conducted in June 2019 in Philadelphia. As part of this event, SETDA provided the opportunity for state members to collaborate with private sector partners, affiliates,  and the U.S. Department of Education.
