Laurence Cocco of New Jersey Honored as
SETDA 2014 State Leader of the Year

November 6, 2014 (Washington, D.C.) – Larry Cocco, Director of the Office of Educational Technology for the New Jersey Department of Education was honored with the State Leader of the Year (SLY) award by the membership of the State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA) at the 2014 Leadership Summit, “Leading and Learning in the Digital Age.” The SLY award goes to an active SETDA member who has exhibited exemplary national leadership in educational technology by supporting districts in his or her state to use technology effectively to improve student learning, collaborating with peers nationally through SETDA initiatives and committees, and engaging with the broader education and policymaking communities to advocate for the role of technology in advancing education.

“Larry’s work and dedication to SETDA exemplifies our mission to improve education through technology policy and practice on the state and national level,” said Peter Drescher, Chair of SETDA’s Board of Directors. “Not only does he serve on the Board and lend his expertise to multiple committees, he also has brought his passion for the educational value of alternate methods of education, including online gaming, to elevate the concept to a national level.”

Wayne Hartschuh, former SETDA board chair and Executive Director, Delaware Center for Educational Technology, cited Cocco’s leadership within New Jersey by noting, “His strong leadership in an initiative to bring more affordable broadband services to schools shaped a revolutionary procedure and process in New Jersey to help ensure broadband access for K-12 students.”
