Achieving ConnectED Goals Remains Urgent Priority

Washington, DC (January 31, 2014) – The following statement can be attributed to State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA) executive director Douglas Levin on the status of the Obama Administration’s ConnectED initiative:

“President Obama launched the ConnectED initiative to dramatically accelerate the preparation of all students for college and 21st century careers through a concerted national effort to address inequities in access to broadband and effective digital learning tools and resources, including to build the capacity of educators to leverage technology to improve teaching and learning through professional development.

A student’s zip code must not determine their access to the American dream. Private sector partnerships must be sustainable and advance public education goals for all students. And, the US Department of Education and FCC must modernize their rules and regulations while also making new, targeted investments sufficient to meeting schools’ needs.

This includes taking action to meet the widely endorsed SETDA recommendation of 1 Gbps of high-capacity broadband service per 1,000 students and educators in all K-12 schools by the 2017-18 school year.

SETDA remains committed to working with the Obama Administration, the FCC, the U.S. Congress and in partnership with like-minded organizations to ensure that the needs identified in the launch of the ConnectED Initiative are not addressed in a piecemeal manner, but meaningfully and comprehensively.”
