From Policy to Practice Working Groups

Participants: SETDA State Members, State Guests and Corporate Partners

The goal of these full day working group sessions is to provide members and corporate partners the opportunity to discuss ideas and develop products to support members work back in their states. SETDA has invited guests from the field to provide expertise for each topic discussion including leads to discuss professional development for each area.  Outcomes will very based on each topic.

Ensuring Broadband and Device Access for all Students

Participants will review the recommendations from SETDA’s recent publication, The Broadband Imperative: Recommendations to Address K-12 Educational Infrastructure Needs and help provide states with tools to help implement these recommendations. In addition, discussions will focus on the need for systemic approaches when implementing high access computing environments, including 1-to-1 initiatives and 21st Cenrury learning environments that include high access to computing devices.

Accelerating the Shift to Digital and Open Content

In September 2012, SETDA will release a new whitepaper, Out of Print: Reimagining the Textbook which shares examples and recommendations related to making the shift from paper textbooks to digital and open content. Participants will discuss the paper’s recommendations and provide guidance for states on how to help district and school officials make a successful transition to digital content which will benefit all students.

Preparing for High-Quality Online Assessment

This session will offer participants the opportunity to discuss issues related to preparing for the pending online assessments.  Representatives from both PARCC and SMAC will provide the latest information from the consortia related to technology readiness preparation and the test development process. Participants will share best practices in planning for new online assessments, including addressing bandwidth, hardware, networks, training for students and professional development for teachers and administrator.

Leveraging “Big Data” to Support Digital Age Learning

While states have been focusing on building robust  longitudinal data systems for accountability and data-based decison making, a number of public-private efforts have recently launched that have the potential to leverage state, local and educator/student-generated data in new and exciting ways for teaching and learning. These efforts include those focused on solving K-12 interoperability challenges, improving search and discovery of education resources, increasing transparency and opening access to education data, and personalizing learning. Participants will get an overview of the work underway in this area, share information about their state’s priorities, asses gaps and opportunities, and – in doing so – contribute to the production of a summary whitepaper for states and policymakers.
