The Leadership Summit brings state educational leaders to the Washington D.C. area to participate in this unique professional learning opportunity. Leaders from more than 40 state departments of education, including leaders in educational technology, assessment, instructional materials and professional development, along with SETDA’s Private Sector Partners attend. The event is designed to foster in-depth dialogue coupled with collaborative work. As part of the Summit, SETDA hosts the one-day Education Forum, an event to shine a spotlight on the full scope of the digital transformation of policy and practice underway in K-12 education. The Ed Forum includes VIP guests from the executive leadership from national educational organizations, policy makers and representatives from think-tanks and various federal agencies to attend and participate as keynote speakers, panelists and working group participants.

Greg Toppo is the national K-12 education reporter for USA Today. A graduate of St. John’s College in Santa Fe, N.M., he taught in both public and private schools for eight years before moving into journalism. His first job was with the Santa Fe New Mexican, a 50,000-circulation daily. He worked for four years as a wire service reporter with the Associated Press, first in Baltimore and then in Washington, D.C., where he became the AP’s national K-12 education writer.

He came to USA Today in 2002 and in 2005 broke the Armstrong Williams “pay for punditry” story that launched a widespread look at government propaganda. Toppo also co-led the USA Today team that in 2011 looked at educator-led cheating on standardized tests. The paper’s series prompted the Washington, D.C., inspector general to investigate high erasure rates in D.C. schools. Toppo was also a 2010 Spencer fellow at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. He is the author of the forthcoming book The Game Believes In You: How Games Can Make Our Kids Smarter (due April 2015).

As the Director of the Office of Educational Technology for the New Jersey Department of Education, Laurence Cocco supervises educational technology initiatives. He is the NJ PARCC State Readiness Coordinator, serves on the national PARCC Technology Committee and chairs the Technology Readiness Operational Working Group. He conducts webinars for G.A.M.E. (Gamers Advancing Meaningful Education). Laurence is Chairman of Thirteen/WNET’s Educational Services Advisory Committee and is on the Board of Directors for SETDA. Past experience includes Deputy Executive Director for New Jersey Network; PBS television producer; Senior Audiovisual Designer at a New York City IT design firm and Media Integration Project Director at Jersey City Public Schools. Laurence has a M.A. in Educational Communication & Technology from NYU.

madisonMadison Consolidated High School, Indiana

Consolidated High School in rural Madison, Indiana transformed educational practices by placing a device in every student’s hand and transitioning to digital content. To address the need to teach student media literacy and digital citizenship, the school created the student led, Madison Digital Leadership Team. Madison’s Digital Leadership program provides the opportunity for participants to create digital content focused on digital citizenship, focused on the importance of the students’ responsibilities to use technology for good and to enhance learning. The Digital Leadership Team members typically meet virtually and exclusively outside of the traditional school day, although the students do receive course credit.
