Student Engagement: How to Use this Tool

What is the Purpose of this Tool?
The goal of this tool is to provide strategies and resources that SETDA members and other educational leaders can use to promote educational technology and it’s effectiveness for increasing student engagement.

How was This Tool Created?
Each year, SETDA utilizes a collaborative process between its membership and the corporate community to determine areas of interest.  As a result of this process, SETDA developed the Teacher's and Technology’s Role In Increased Student Engagement toolkit.

A working group of SETDA members and corporate representatives met monthly via conference call to discuss and refine the components of this tool.  Initial discussions included defining the goals of this tool and the selection of successful approaches to highlight.  Throughout this process, the group provided input and feedback for innovative programs, sample documents, and overall messaging.

How Can You Use this Tool?

SETDA believes that all stakeholders – administrators, teachers, parents, students, business community members, and legislators - have the desire to ensure that all students are actively engaged and are ready to particpate in 21st century society.  However, we also know that they are unaware of many of the innovative approaches using technology for increasing student engagement that could be utilized in their states and districts.  Stakeholders can use this tool to:

  • Learn more about the importance of student engagement
  • Learn how technology engages 21st century students
  • Learn how to integrate Web 2.0 technology tools into the classroom
  • Find professional development opportunities
  • Learn more about the policy issues surrounding the use of Web 2.0 technology tools
  • Learn what other states and districts are doing to engage students
  • Learn how to share the benefits of using technology to enhance student engagement

How Do You Navigate through this Tool?

The tool is organized into seven major components detailed below.  Administrators, teachers, parents, students, and other stakeholders are encouraged to use all or some aspects of the tool to learn more about the role technology plays in teaching and learning.  Each component is described more fully below:

Whenever possible, we have provided links to websites for easier access to program and policy examples, and resources.
