Student Engagement: PD Tools

Sustainable, high quality professional development is critical for comprehensive technology integration. Professional development must change teacher practice and instruction to effectively increase achievement.

Currently, over 40% of students in grades 6-12 cite their teacher as an obstacle since it is the teacher who increasingly is limiting the “when and where” of using technology at school (Speak Up 2007).

Below is a table highlighting some high quality professional development programs as related to Web 2.0 technology integration.

TECHNOLOGYSTATE PROJECT SUMMARY

Podcasting

TennesseeChanda Parker, an instructional technologist in the East Tennessee School District, created podcasts for teachers to use in the classroom. Some of the podcasts included a field trip to a water treatment plant, a teacher working with students as they learn about math concepts, school plays and other events. Parker uploaded the podcasts to servers so that teachers, parents, and students can easily access them.
Web 2.0AlabamaThe Division of Instructional Technology offered Web 2.0 training sessions around the state. They have also offered the training in house to other areas within the agency and created the Best Practices Center with the goal to improve student achievement through professional development.

These discussions take place online via listservs, at state conferences, and within online courses. Several workshop and conference venues have focused on Web 2.0 tools. Lyndeborough Central School recently piloted a CyberSmart! online workshop which engaged all of its teachers in learning, discussing and applying the 21st century skills needed to safely harness the Internet’s potential — promoting students’ creative inquiry, collaboration and critical thinking.
