Teacher Advancement Program, The Milken Family Foundation

TAP's goal is to draw more talented people to the teaching profession – and keep them there – by making it more attractive and rewarding to be a teacher. Under the TAP system, good teachers can earn higher salaries and advance professionally, just as in other careers. And they can do it without leaving the classroom, where they often are needed most. At the same time, TAP helps teachers become the best they can be, by giving them opportunities to learn better teaching strategies and holding them accountable for their performance. TAP is based on five key principles: 1. Multiple Career Paths 2. Market-Driven Compensation 3. Performance-Based Accountability 4. Ongoing, applied professional growth 5. Expanding the Supply of High Quality Educators.

New Window  Technology Coach Handbook
The Handbook cited below was designed originally to support Jerry Bates' Title 2-D competitive grant program in Tennessee, but it is now being used in other states. Art A Technology Coach Handbook prepared by a team of researchers and practitioners is designed to support inservice workshops led by teachers for teams of collaborating teachers in school settings. The Handbook is a terrific resource for supporting the efforts of regular classroom teachers who work with their colleagues to advance the integration and effective use of technology in individual classrooms and throughout an entire school. After a discussion relating to this document, Larry Cuban, Professor Emeritus of Education at Stanford remarked: "The notion that the computer is a learning tool is firmly planted in the language used to describe new technologies; yet integrating the tool into the daily repertoire of teachers remains the ultimate challenge. The designation of a teacher as a full-time technology coach to assist his or her colleagues appears to be one of the practical solutions that more school districts should consider." Gary Bitter (Arizona State University) said: "The Handbook developed by Dr. Deborah Lowther and her colleagues at the University of Memphis has benefitted from more than two years of independent research and evaluation reports. An experienced and well-trained educational technology 'coach' will be in a position to facilitate the collaborative learning that needs to take place if we expect uses of technology to support and extend opportunities for all students to learn and achieve higher academic standards."
