Dee Applebee (SC), Mike Kozak (NE), Cathy Higgins (NH), Carla Wade (OR), and SETDA's Doug Levin attended The Global Education Technology Summit (GETS) 2010 in July. Held in Calgary and supported by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, this global summit was the culmination of a series of regional GETS events that took place in late 2009 and early 2010 and was attended by representatives from more than 100 countries.

In August, Doug Levin represented SETDA at the Software & Information Industry Association’s (SIIA) “Innovate to Educate: A symposium on [Re]Design for Personalized Education” symposium. CCSSO and ASCD were co-conveners of the event, which also was attended by Melinda Maddox (AL).

Doug Levin participated in the panel discussion, Citizenship in a Connected Culture: Research and Best Practices. Digital media is profoundly changing the nature of childhood, and today’s connected culture brings with it ethical challenges that are unique to this generation of young people. These challenges manifest in activities that are familiar to any educator today, such as cyberbullying, sexting, digital cheating, andmore. This panel examined the research on these challenges and offer insight on developing effective practices that encourage responsible media use by young people and critical thinking about ethical challenges by all school stakeholders.
