IV. Creating a Coordinated Approach to Professional DevelopmentTo improve teaching and learning on a national level, a coordinated effort involving all stakeholders is necessary. This section of the toolkit contains tools that coordinate professional development to enhance student achievement so that all learners may reach 21st century skill goals. A graphic illustrates the essential elements critical to achieving coordinated professional development outcomes.
A matrix lists funding sources and initiatives for professional development that are available to K-12 and higher education. It describes how each fund allows for or requires fund disbursement for professional development. The matrix specifies whether the funding is for general or targeted use or can be used for professional development that specifically supports online learning. The chart helps the viewer see potential coordination and collaboration intersections, a feature that will be especially useful to state directors and district personnel.
A case study template incorporates the essential elements outlined in the graphic. The template expands upon the features of successful coordinated professional development. It can be used by practitioners designing a coordinated approach to professional development as they study and gather information from existing programs.
Along with the template, we have provided completed template examples for the eMINTS project (Missouri) and for the FOR-PD project (Florida).
