Conclusion and Recommendations

The High Quality Professional Development Work Group concluded the work at the NLI, recommending that SETDA take these possible next steps:

  1. Identify and highlight specific examples and models of best practices in professional development.
  2. Develop a white paper supporting the policy statement provided by this Work Group that recommends sustained professional development for administrators. Topics to be covered in a white paper might include:
    • The provision of separate and focused training in leadership and technology literacy for administrators.
    • An expression of the urgency and importance of this training.
    • The recommendation that such training exhibit the characteristics of high quality professional development, including a focus on outcomes.
    • Reference to and support of NETSoA, an International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and Technology Standards for School Administrators (TSSA) collaborative.
    • Reference to and support of higher education and other leadership development programs as allies in this effort.
    • The recommendation that adequate funding and resources be dedicated to high quality, sustained professional development for administrators.
    • The recommendation that the processes of hiring, training, licensing, and evaluating school administrators work to support this need for technology competency.
  3. Disseminate the "Sustained Professional Development for Administrators" position statement widely and broadly to other groups of education professionals.
