Conclusion and Recommendations
The High Quality Professional Development Work Group concluded the work at the NLI, recommending that SETDA take these possible next steps:
- Identify and highlight specific examples and models of best practices in professional development.
- Develop a white paper supporting the policy statement provided by this Work Group that recommends sustained professional development for administrators. Topics to be covered in a white paper might include:
- The provision of separate and focused training in leadership and technology literacy for administrators.
- An expression of the urgency and importance of this training.
- The recommendation that such training exhibit the characteristics of high quality professional development, including a focus on outcomes.
- Reference to and support of NETSoA, an International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and Technology Standards for School Administrators (TSSA) collaborative.
- Reference to and support of higher education and other leadership development programs as allies in this effort.
- The recommendation that adequate funding and resources be dedicated to high quality, sustained professional development for administrators.
- The recommendation that the processes of hiring, training, licensing, and evaluating school administrators work to support this need for technology competency.
- Disseminate the "Sustained Professional Development for Administrators" position statement widely and broadly to other groups of education professionals.
