Matrix of Types of Professional Development Models

This matrix of models of professional development is intended to assist state directors and district personnel in identifying types of professional development models so that the salient characteristics of each model can be used to inform the planning, design, implementation and monitoring of professional development programs. The types of models included on the matrix are not ranked in any order of significance or quality. The matrix is not intended to be an inclusive or fully complete document; rather, it is meant to be a starting point to stimulate discussions and to assist in creating a dialogue across groups.

Three types of models are described:

  1. Holistic: statewide and comprehensive models;
  2. Targeted: models specific to a content area or population; and
  3. Product Specific: models that use specific or prescriptive technology or methodologies.
Each of these types is considered further, with attention to Purpose and Strategy, Products, Accessibility, Dissemination, Sustainability and Funding Sources, Scalability, Evaluation, Lessons Learned, and Relevant Research. The matrix is in tabular format.
