Designed to provide professional development for teachers, administrators, and school personnel in K-12 school districts, this program includes graduate-level online courses, community of learners networks, and workshops for specific educational needs. Through a variety of experiences, it provides learning opportunities and resources to support all teachers in their efforts to improve student learning and achievement. The impetus for the program was the need to provide professional development for educators that better suited their learning styles and their schedules. Also, the addition of online learning components to the already strong face-to-face professional development programs served to strengthen the impact of ongoing school reform initiatives. Initial efforts involved individuals from across different divisions of the state department of education (including professional development, curriculum, teacher standards, instructional technology and school nutrition) and outside experts (Educational Development Center). The following programs constitute the current core of the Louisiana Online Professional Development initiative: LEADTech: a technology initiative that prepares principals and district superintendents with an in-depth understanding of the role of instructional technology as it relates to total school improvement and increased student learning. (http://www.doe.state.la.us/leadtech/) Louisiana Principal Induction Program: a state-mandated program that builds the capacity of new building level administrators to provide leadership to their schools in both instructional and administrative areas. (http://www.doe.state.la.us/lde/lcet/1632.html) Bridging the Gap - Universal Design for Learning: a professional development workshop, designed for general and special educators, that addresses the challenges of making the general curriculum accessible for all learners. (http://www.doe.state.la.us/lde/lcet/399.html) Effective Instructional Technology - An Introduction: part of the Effective Instructional Technology (EIT) Online Course Series. The first EIT course is designed to help Louisiana teachers understand and apply the benefits of instructional technology in their classrooms. The twelve-week course focuses on knowing and applying the ISTE NETS standards for teachers.
