Establish a Conceptual Framework
Through what lens are we going to look? What paradigm? Take some consideration at this stage for how you will approach solving the problem. Anthropological approaches might be appropriate for a problem such as digital equity, where you should draw from the larger social context. An experimental or quasi-experimental approach might be useful in examining the effectiveness of one particular teaching intervention or tool. A semiotic approach might look at what sort of cultural biases are present in what is occurring in classroom communication.
Consider existing theories and how they influence or relate to the research. Often practitioners have not articulated their theoretical perspectives, but have them implicitly-their own views of what will enhance education. Making assumptions explicit allows them to be examined and tested. Clarifying a program's underlying theories is an important part of the process.
Note that there is a complex interplay between theory and research studies: A research study must include questions, hypotheses, or predicted outcomes based upon a theoretical framework, but the results of the study can also serve to revise the theoretical framework.
