SETDA National Leadership Institute Toolkit

Key Components
Essential to Building A National Education Technology Plan

"It was critical for us as state leaders to gather in a professional atmosphere with researchers and federal representatives to identify our commonalities and needs in developing a National Educational Technology Plan - and the National Leadership Institute (NLI) was an ideal format for this to occur! The group came to the consensus that it is critical the plan help lead in the development of local, state and national "practicing communities" around the promotion and effective use of technology for all learners. The eventual writing team has the crucial task of developing a dynamic document that models how technology planning, policy, research, and implementation can impact the development of successful citizens with 21st century skills. We believe the agreed upon 'collective charge' put together by the NLI working group will help inform the writing as they begin their work."

The National Education Technology Plan (NETP) Work Group worked to build consensus around several aspects of the NETP that they believe will provide a strong foundation for building the NETP. This included:

  • the identification of themes that should be inherent to all aspects of the NETP;
  • the development of a set of recommendations to be included in the NETP;
  • a list of critical stakeholders who should be consulted and considered in the development of the NETP.
The information included below is intended to provide a foundation for the development of the National Education Technology Plan as well as provide support to state leaders, as they develop and revamp their state education technology plans in accordance with the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001(NCLB).
